Ellie in Africa

In 2005 & 2006, Ellie traveled with her family and a team from African Leadership to visit the areas where Ellie's Run for Africa has benefited. Here are a few of her journal entries from this period.

This morning we got up and eat breakfast. Then we went to the Massie village with William (our warrior). There we saw their mud huts, cows (they think they own all the cows in the world), and children who cried they were so terrified of my hair. While we were walking the women came out and did a welcome dance for us. But not for all of us because Amy and I had to join them. We had no idea what to do but after awhile picked up the dance but never the words.

Ellie with Kids at the Wash BasinAfter this we went to the airport which is a dirt strip and a small hunt. Our flight kept getting delayed so William showed us really neat tricks that we never could get. When our flight came we said our goodbyes and left. When we got back we went to an orphanage. The kids were from pre-k to the high school. We played soccer and handed out stickers and bubbles. After this we went to a pastor training center were daddy talked. After that we went to our hotel and fell fast asleep.

Kids on the PlaygroundThis morning we met Timothy Malahie in Kidera and went to see the Blue House. As we walked we saw mountains of trash and rivers of open sewig. While we walked two-five year olds would run up and say “How are you, How are you”. We would say fine thanks how are you and they would start all over again. When we finally got to the school we had a group of about 15-20 kids following us. As we went inside we taught them songs and then served them lunch. As we were serving them I started giving the as much as I could fit in their bowls. As this happened a man ran up and told me, not so much, not so much, there are so many! After this my dad took over and I started getting peoples and taking them to get food. I started to take one girls bowl but she held on tight. I told her I was going to put food in it but that bowl meant she got lunch so she didn’t let go.

Ellie and Pastor After the long line was through we went to lunch with Mr. Malahie. He told us about how he was robbed and held at gun point. And when they found out he was a preacher they got out of there. After this we went to another school. It’s also founded by African Leadership. Here there were two little girls (7 and 5) that played with me. When we had to go I gave one girl my cross necklace and the other one my bracelet.

Ellie Playing Game with SchoolkidsOnce we left we went back to the orphanage. Here we handout shoes! It was delightful but heartbreaking. It was delightful because one little girl who on the first day sat back in a corner but when she received her shoes she played with the others. It was heartbreaking because afterwards a girl my age (12) came up to me and said teary eyed, “Ellie, I didn’t get any shoes.” When handing out shoes was over we played more soccer. Then we left and went to our hotel and went to sleep.
